15. July 2001 - Persimmons agree to 'soften' concrete retaining walls and outfalls

After lobbying by the Pathfields Group, the site developers have agreed to 'soften' the harsh concrete appearance of the new retaining wall at the entrance of the site and similarly treat other concrete culverts and outfalls on the site.

Persimmons Technical Director has confirmed that, "we are committed to softening the effects of this retaining wall".  A decision is yet to be taken on the type of treatment to be given to the stark concrete surfaces, but the Pathfields Group view this as a major achievement which will significantly enhance the visual appearance of the re-formed Long Brook and development entrance.

In an effort to demonstrate the kind of treatment that could be achieved, the Pathfields Group have submitted sketches to Persimmons to illustrate the impact sensitively cladding the surfaces would make to allow the new engineering features to blend into the historic landscape. We have also asked for the now redundant concrete outfalls to be removed and the bank re-landscaped.  The sketches below show how the site could be improved.

Stop Press News ..... City Highway Officials have assured that planned roadworks to repair pavements along Dark Street Lane will not require the demolition of the west parapet of the stone bridge as was earlier feared.  Measures have been agreed to protect the west parapet during pavement works.
